The site yields just around 1 ton per acre of fist sized clusters that explode with flavor. It is also an extraordinarily slow fermenter. The 2019 is still finishing its primary now and the 2021 and 2023 are on an equally slow pace. I am obsessed with the complexity that is possible with ferments of this length.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThis bottling incorporates new vines of Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin, Chardonnay, Pineu D’Aunis, Poulsard and Trousseau along with the Riesling. It was macerated on the skins for a week and then pressed into a single 1100 liter cask for aging.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe conditions in 2022 were extraordinary. The coolest growing season we’ve ever experienced finished with a warm and rainless October. This allowed us to pick everything extremely late, at full ripeness, creating seamless wines that retained a very fine tread of acidity. This wine is perhaps the best example of these qualities of the vintage. It’s full ripe peaches, lavender and stone. The texture is lush with no sense of weight and then at the end everything comes together with a very aromatic thread of salt and lime.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThis is will be very approachable young, in stark contrast to the first release from 2020, but I suspect it will surprise with how long it ages. Prior to this year we had always vinified it as a full red wine. In this form, it is monstrously concentrated and truly demands at least five years in barrel. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003e This year we decided to approach it differently. We kept it on the skins as long as possible, and at the last instant, in the uncertain terrain that characterizes the middle of the fermentation, just before it turned into red wine, we pressed it into cask. I would consider this rosé (albeit maybe the darkest one imaginable), most people will call it a red wine. In either case it is characterized by overwhelming waves of dark fruits, spice and flowers. Dangerously drinkable. It is the warmest part of the hillside. Pinot grown here is wonderfully lush and exotic but we preferred to transition this location to something later ripening. The idea was to try to find the most difficult varieties to ripen on our site so that we could pick as late as possible, push as hard as possible and find ripeness in the coolest, riskiest conditions.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe grafted from Pinot Noir to Nebbiolo and varieties from the Valley d’Aosta in two different periods. The material we used was roughly 70% Nebbiolo 20% Petite Arvine and smaller amounts of Cornalin, Fumin, Mayolet and Petite Rouge. We first grafted .5 acres here in 2018 and again in 2021. There was a terrible heat wave just after grafting in 2021 and most of the grafts did not survive. We are still recovering from this and we only get a small amount of Nebbiolo mixed in amongst the Pinot Noir that is growing back from its roots in the eastern half of the block… we were actually able to make almost 300L of Arco Iris again from it this year for the first time since 2020.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe first vintage was in the very cold 2019 vintage that we barely ripened due to an early frost. We made a single 600 cask that year, which we bottled last year after a little over 5 years in barrel. Since then the vintages have oscillated in character with 2021 and 2024 providing the ripest wines and the other vintages somewhere in between. That said, the wine is always far more delicate than a wine from Barolo or Barbaresco. It’s almost as if you took those flavors and laid them over the structural characteristics of a Volnay or particularly fine Jura Poulsard. Some of this is coming from the inclusion of so much Petite Arvine, but mostly from the very cool, Alpine location of the farm. The fermentation and aging of the wine borrows from different traditions. In 2021 it started to shift and with this wine from 2022 the next transformation is complete. This vintage and the next have more fruit and purity than the 19 or 21, while retaining the power and soulfullness that is so captivating in those bottlings.
