Vines have put a growing season’s worth of stored energy from the sun and soil into seed and fruit. Grape skins have changed color to black or gold from bright green. And across the northern hemisphere, hands or machines are picking and sorting, N95 masks or bandanas are going on to keep out wildfire smoke, trucks with half-ton macro bins strapped to the flatbed are winding up mountainsides, and tankers full of bulk juice are getting into traffic jams on rural highways from Puglia to the Languedoc to the San Joaquin Valley.
In short, whether you call it vendemmia or vendanges, colheita or cosecha, Weinlese or vinobraní, what a vintage really means is a year in someone’s life.
We’ll mark the moment with three bottles from 2020, the most recent harvest we can drink as wine. We’ll acknowledge the people whose annual labor makes wine possible, reflect on the last year, and talk about farming practices, climate change, equity, and the future of winegrowing.
Each class kit serves 1-5 drinkers and includes three bottles of wine, food pairing and service suggestions, a weekly playlist, and a link to an hour and 20 minute remote wine tasting with sommelier JAMES SLIGH.
