Part 1 of a four-part deep dive begins in the Loire’s heartland, around the city of Tours. Chenin and cabernet franc ripen on flint and gravel and soft tuffeau limestone, natural labyrinthine catacombs hide barrels (or people), wine lovers who used to collect white burgundy and Right Bank bordeaux find soft landings. The wines are classic and impeccably balanced, and their growers have become icons. It only gets weirder (and wilder) going forward.
