The longest river in France, and the ‘last wild river in Europe’, the Loire cuts through a kaleidoscopic array of regions and soil types on its way from central France’s ancient volcanic uplands to the Atlantic Ocean. If there’s a place in the world of wine I could drink from for the rest of my life without leaving, it’s here.
Part 2 of our four-part deep dive picks up in Anjou, where yellowish-white limestone blinks off like a lightbulb into an eternal night of blue-black schist forged in extinct volcanoes. Only a little while ago, it was a rural backwater known for cheap supermarket rosé and the faded glory of some once-revered dessert wines. But the last twenty years have seen Anjou transform into the nexus of an extraordinary community of natural winegrowers. There are champions of grolleau, the local underdog; there is chenin’s new cult canon; there are a bunch of people bottling all of their wine as Vin de France, so you don’t realize until you visit that everyone you’re in love with is coming from the same place. And running like a coal seam underneath it all: the smoke, intensity, and wildness of schist.
(Sit in on any one of the Loire sessions, or pick up a discounted season pass for all four episodes.)
