A new voice in Vosne
It's a rare new entry for Vosne – and we're here for it.
Vincent Paindavoine spends his days in some of the best vineyards in Burgundy – Clos de la Roche, Echézeaux and Mazis-Chambertin – as the vineyard manage for the Hospices de Beaune’s Grand Cru holdings in the Cote de Nuits. Serious job.
During the evenings he is pushing forward a brand new domain from a small amount of his very own holdings. These new '22s mark his first release of them.
It’s rare to see a new name in Vosne. But, Paindavoine’s isn’t exactly new: his parents and grandparents were both longtime employees of DRC, working in the vineyards.
Beginning in the late 1960s they bought tiny parcels in Vosne; and Aubert de Villaine would let them borrow one of his tractors in the evenings to tend to these vines. Eventually they were able to accrue a grand total of 1.5 ha, holdings which are now being passed to Vincent.
Vincent has been farming the small family parcels for years now, organically and biodynamically. Of the 1.5ha of land, Vincent has inherited .9, with the remaining slated to be coming his way in 2025; currently his uncle (the mayor of Vosne!) owns them and is retiring.
The planned release looks like this (by vintage):
-- 2022s currently in stock, below: Bourgogne Aligoté 'Les Paquiers,' Bourgogne Chardonnay 'Les Chassagnes,' Coteaux Bourguignons 'Les Paquiers,' and Nuits Saint Georges 'Les Fleurières'
-- 2023 will add Gevrey-Chambertin ‘Les Crais’
-- 2025 vintage finally sees the addition of AOC Vosne-Romanée and a bottling of Vosne ‘Les Beaux Monts’
The small amount of wine he makes now, both the reds and the whites, are with a gentle hand. The whites see a soft pressing, the reds almost exclusively destemmed, and everything is fermented natively. For aging, new wood is only used for cuvées which have more than two barrels, keeping the fruit quality front and center.
The below vineyard sites are all practicing biodynamic:
2022 Vincent Paindavoine Bourgogne Aligoté 'Les Paquiers' $50
90+ year old Aligoté from a lieu-dit in the village of Vosne-Romanée's north end. Fermented and aged in older barrel.
2022 Vincent Paindavoine Bourgogne Côte D’Or Blanc 'Les Chassagnes' $50
Chardonnay planted in 1984, from another lieu-dit in northern Vosne-Romanée. Fermented and aged in barrel with 20% new wood.
2022 Vincent Paindavoine Coteaux Bourguignons 'Les Paquiers' $50
Pinot Noir planted in 1968 and 2014, from the same lieu-dit as the Aligoté. Destemmed and aged in older barrels.
2022 Vincent Paindavoine Nuits-St-Georges Premier Cru 'Les Fleurières' $110
80+ year old Pinot Noir from an iron-rich lieu-dit just under Premier Cru 'Pruliers,' on the south side of Nuits-St-Georges. Destemmed and aged in older barrels.
