Beyond Ribeiro
Our two newest producers – Mixtura and Augalevada – both call Ribeiro home. But their work reaches far beyond the appellation.
Stylistically, the wines nod to Jura (with playful use of flor) and Burgundy, offering both elegance and polish. More literally, their sourcing spans the region: Mixtura even crosses into Portugal for fruit, while Augalevada ventures as far as the Galician coast (Salnés!) to produce a mind-bending Albariño. In both cases, there’s a steady hand in the cellar—an immediate, low-intervention approach that still feels confident and deeply intentional.
For our Gallego fans: if Ribeiro’s past lives in the wines of Emilio Rojo, and its present in the stirring work of Luis Rodríguez, then its future surely lies with Mixtura and Augalevada. Below, we dig into why.
AUGALEVADA
It's not a stretch to say Iago Garrido is one of Spain’s most exciting talents.
His Augalevada is the first Demeter certified winery in Ribeiro, reviving 4ha of abandoned terraces where he's grafted Agudelo (recently found to be Chenin) with Brancellao, Sousón, Caiño da Tierra, Caiño Longo – along with the better known Treixadura & Godello grapes. All of which sit on Ribeiro’s well known granite soils.
In the cellar, the wines are natively fermented and all see a touch of flor in the aging process. Almost all get time in amphora (which are buried in the cellar floor) and/or old wood. Though each cuvée is unique, there is a through line in the wines. The white wines being a balancing act of salty flor and phenolic power, while the reds are lively, gastronomic wines that see a healthy dose of whole cluster and gentle extractions.

MIXTURA
If Augalevada brings out Ribeiro’s terroir through multi-varietal blends, Mixtura is framing Galicia by its soils – regardless of borders – in ways we haven’t seen before. The project is led by Gutiér Seijo Otero, former technical director at Dominio do Bibei, who brings deep regional knowledge and a soil-first philosophy to the fore.
With Mixtura, Gutiér sources across the region, prioritizing soil over DO boundaries – or even national borders. Slate, granite, schist: these are the organizing principles, not grape variety or appellation.
A standout example: Alvarinho from Portugal’s Monção e Melgaço, the grape’s spiritual home and a benchmark granite terroir (think Luis Seabra’s 'Granito Cru'). Most wines are blends (with two site-specific, mono-varietal exceptions), and all are naturally fermented and aged with restraint in a mix of old wood, amphora, and chestnut barrels.

The results are consistently textured and soil-driven—stony, silty, and direct. One of the most creative (and delicious) new voices in the region.
