Lamoresca's newest (secret Catarratto, too)
The newest release from Sicily's Lamoresca is their most expressive and fine-tuned yet.
The below includes a brand new cuvée of Catarratto (from a literal handful of cases imported stateside)...dig in!

If you're not already familiar with the estate's history, you can bone up here. But, key details: Lamoresca is a true family operation in Sicily's rugged middle-of-nowhere interior, with no other winery for at least 50 miles. It is very hot, very hilly (elevation is key here), with little rain and compact sandstone soils (we've included some crazy photos below for reference).
The Rizzo family has planted more southern varietals here (Frappato, Nero d'Avola) and they are geographically closer to Vittoria; but Etna is just visible in the distance, and legend Frank Cornelissen was an early mentor to the work.
Overall, the wines are a stunning, unique midpoint between the aromas of Vittoria and the power and texture of Etna.
Despite a long love for these wines, we were struck all over again when we tasted this release. '24 was an especially expressive, floral vintage; and the Riservas are unbelievably better than ever.
2024 Lamoresca Bianco, Sicily, Italy $42
100% Vermentino di Corso destemmed and macerated for a couple days before pressing into a mix of cement and barrel and aging over winter. Salty and fresh with lacy floral aromatics. Just a beautiful wine.
2022 Lamoresca Catarratto, Terre Siciliane IGT, Italy $58
Their first public release of this cuvée, a full ripeness, macerated expression of 100% Catarratto. Dense and serious wine. As with the other cuvées, this is all estate fruit. Very limited, 2 btl max per customer.
2024 Lamoresca Rosato, Sicily, Italy $37
A pivot from previous vintages (which were almost 100% Nero), this is roughly 40/50/10 Frappato/Nero d'Avola/Zibibbo. Zibibbo sees a week of skin contact; Frappato and Nero are macerated for several hours with the Zibibbo pied de cuve. Aged in concrete. Absolutely delicious, "adult Capri Sun" vibes.
2024 Lamoresca 'Nerocapitano' Frappato, Sicily, Italy $38
A play on Capitano Nero, the local name for Frappato. 100% Frappato destemmed, softly pressed and aged in concrete over the winter. Feels aromatically vinous and serious but the structure is fresh, dainty.
2024 Lamoresca Rosso, Sicily, Italy $43
The most vintage-transparent cuvée each year; '24 is a mostly even split of Frappato and Nero d'Avola, with a touch of Grenache. Destemmed, fermented in plastic 'tini' and barrels with a month of maceration, aged in cement tank. Juicy, garrigue-scented, very fresh with a touch of grip.
2023 Lamoresca 'Nero' Rosso, Sicily, Italy $53
A Riserva-level bottling of 100% Nero d'Avola. Macerated for two months, followed by aging 1 year in concrete tank and 2 years in bottle. Velvety, violet-scented fruit with super fine tannins, as pretty as Nero gets!
2023 Lamoresca 'Elsa' Rosso, Sicily, Italy $58
A Riserva-level bottling of 60/20/20 Nerello Mascalese/Frappato/Nero d'Avola. Their concept for this cuvée is three grapes, from three soil types (here, clay/sand/limestone), with three weeks of maceration – and for '23, the third vintage release of this wine! Aged 1 year in concrete tank and 2 years in bottle. Perfumed, fresh cut herbs, savory tomato-driven palate. A really beautiful capsule of their Vittoria-meets-Etna style.
