Lienhardt's newest evolution
It’s no secret that we love Antoine Lienhardt — we highlight this release every new year. And yet, there’s always something new to share.
Despite coming from a background making more traditional, play-it-safe Burgundy (many years ago), Antoine now quietly represents the leading edge of the region and continues to expand, experiment, refine his work. All for the sake of thought-provoking expressions that crush every vintage.
The newest release landing this month includes a mix of '24 and '23 (whites see more age, plus a re-release of '23 reds to accompany the short '24 vintage). So we’re sharing what Antoine has been up to, and offering this whole sweeping lineup for pre-order (extended élevage Aligoté, anyone?) Get in!

In the Vineyard
Our team had the pleasure to sit down with Antoine last year and hear his updates firsthand. If you’re catching up: we have a compilation of our previous thoughts on Antoine’s work in our Journal here.
The commitment to his vineyards is reflective of a planned long-term transition to all estate fruit, winding down négoce work as much as feasible. A major focus has been on planting trees – no fewer than 1,000, of more than two dozen varieties – insulating the estate with biodiversity. It's a move he's seen such an impact from that he (very much against conventional wisdom) planted trees instead of vines in a ripped-up vineyard site. It's a bold statement to forego planting appellation land to vine. But, it's hard to argue with the result: a beautiful forest tucked into Burgundy's seemingly endless stretches of vineyards, and a source for captivating wines.

Where he is planting new vines, Antoine is now using gobelet (bush training), rare in Burgundy but it's where he's seen the most success in his older vines. There's no hyper-focus on vine stress here; his fresh perspective is that climate change presents such stress already, the job in the vineyard is really to prevent overexposure and regain balance. Likewise, spacing between vines is unconventionally large to create less competition between vines.
In the Cellar
Like many progressive Burgundy producers, Antoine continues his whole berry infusion style (which he shared was appropriately inspired by a bottle of l'Anglore over a decade ago). The "anti-extraction" method mixes whole berries and direct press juice to allow subtle, integrated layers to develop over time.
He pursues a Jura-like POV; keeping reds lively and fresh, whites a more broad expression. The whites see an extra year in barrel, on the gross lees. And, feeling comfortable with the pH level, Antoine does not use sulfur in vinifying or aging his white wines.
It's exciting to see his work with white wines expand; this release there's new Chardonnay, and rare extended élevage Aligoté. His Aligoté parcel is centenarian, with small, very golden berries and relatively easy to farm; it's well worth noting that Antoine (sharing the perspective of Aligoté master Sylvain Pataille) feels the grape is the future of Burgundy.
