Radikon's newest cuvées

02/25/25
For the first time in years, a duo of new wines from family Radikon. Introducing: POP!

Just as Saša Radikon added to his father Stanko’s iconic work by introducing the 'S' line of wines (which see shorter macerations and are bottled in 750s), his younger sister Ivana has released her first two wines under the family label.

Similarly, these see even less maceration; but, distinctly, these are the first bottles from their holdings just over the fence in Slovenia.

In recent years, the Radikons have acquired land in Slovenia. The Italy-based winery is mere miles from the border, so it's a natural progression for their work; the famed marl soils you find Collio are the same (here called ponca, instead of ponka), as is the climate.

These are high density plantings of Ribolla Gialla, Malvasia, Tocai Friulano, Merot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Which again, naturally falls into the Radikon lineup. The idea of a referential winery crossing nearby borders to farm the same varietals on similar terroir reminds us of biodynamic estate Weingut Tement who – in this case, coming over the Austrian border – started making Slovenian wine in 2009.

Ivana, who joined the family winery in 2017, is making the wines from the new Slovenian site. These are the youngest, freshest take on the Radikon style yet.

Of course, the white varietals are macerated, but only for a couple of days; followed by a rest in tank for 10 months before being bottled without filtration and a touch of SO2. The red is also just lightly macerated, and raised the same.

Like the name of the two cuvees (POP!) implies, these are lively, young wines to be drunk with verve.
We love seeing the greats push. And, this case, making their wines more accessible to all levels of wine lovers.
