The $30 Kimmeridgian Bubbles we love

A BOTTLE WE LOVE
STEINMETZ 'LIAISON' CRÉMANT BRUT

WHAT'S IN THE BOTTLE

Biodynamic Pinot Blanc and Pinot Noir made sparkling via the Champagne method, with gentle pressing and fermentation in stainless steel. It's a vibrant, hydrating wine that highlights a very special terroir: Kimmeridgian limestone – in Germany. This is from the Obermosel, a special but obscure southern stretch of the otherwise slate-dominated Mosel River, where the Paris Basin edges over the border from France.

WHO MAKES IT

Stephan Steinmetz is a 6th generation grower and passionate defender of the Obermosel's distinct traditions, particularly the hyperlocal Elbling grape variety. His 6 hectare estate also includes Burgundian varieties (like the Pinot Blanc and Noir featured here), and about a third of the production is in Champagne-method sparkling wine. But particularly exceptional is his biodynamic farming, perhaps the best in the area, allowing for a true expression of this special pocket of Germany.

WHY WE DIG IT

It's stony, pomaceous – expressive of both its limestone terroir and orchard-fruited varietals. And, sharing the same fossilized seashell terroir as many of our favorite grower Champagnes, there's a quality level here that is getting just so hard to find for $30-and-under.

HOW WE'RE DRINKING IT

This is a bottle built for joy and flexibility – bring it to every gathering over the next two weeks (and stock up to refresh your guests).
