The Singular Wines of Champagne Agrapart
In a time when grower Champagne has never been more relevant, Agrapart still has few equals in or out of the region.
This legendary producer is worthy of the reverence: their history predates almost all other growers, and four generations of Agrapart vignerons have made Avize a place of singular wines.
All six cuvees that came to the U.S. are now available. One delicious and humbling morning this week our team tasted through all of them and discussed what makes these so incredibly special.
ALL ABOUT TERROIR
"The house style is the vineyards"
Pascal Agrapart and his father are pioneers of terroir as a concept in Champagne. Along with Larmandier (and then Selosse), they were the first to vinify and bottle based on terroir rather than style.
THE ORIGINAL GROWERS
When Agrapart was founded in 1894, it was extremely rare that those who grew the grapes also made the wine. But Agrapart has been estate-grown from the beginning. Pascal spends much of his time in the vineyard–a legacy style of operation, as the family effectively created the category of Grower Champagne.
INHERENTLY BIODYNAMIC
With very cold and wild ferments, extremely low sulfur levels, and a focus on vineyard biodiversity, Agrapart follows biodynamic principles in the vineyard and cellar. Pascal also relies on biodiversity to combat climate change, by utilizing other plants in the vineyard to temper sugar development of their fruit, preventing over-ripening in the face of rising temps.
