Welcoming Pyramid Valley Back đ
If youâre in our wine club Leon Circle, you know my feelings about Canterbury. Itâs a profound terroir defined by limestone, imprinted on us years ago through our experience with a small biodynamic winery, Pyramid Valley.
The wines moved me deeply and made me pay attention. They grew into cult status, then the original owner passed away and the wines seemingly disappeared. But now, under new ownership, the same limestone-driven wines have been brought back to life. With the same strict adherence to biodynamics and natural winemaking, the wines are striking. Having just tasted the whole lineup, I can say: theyâre not just a reminder of the old wines but a true return to them. â Chris
The Pyramid Valley vineyards lie on the breathtaking, high altitude Waikari Estate in North Canterbury. In 2017, friends Steve Smith and Brian Sheth continued the Pyramid Valley legacy that was created by dedicated biodynamic farmers and vignerons Mike and Claudia Elze Weersing in 2000. Huw Kinch is the Estate Manager and Winemaker who brings his experience and passion for making New Zealand Pinot Noir and Chardonnay to the beautiful Pyramid Valley wines.
Biodynamics still guide their winemaking methods and philosophies so the wines authentically express their native environment. In the cellar, they only use indigenous yeasts, natural fining, and minimal filtration if at all.Â
