2024 Birdhorse, Verdelho 'Borden Ranch', USA

The Vineyard
Our Verdelho grapes hailed from two different ranches this season. The first is the Vista Luna vineyard in the Borden Ranch AVA of Lodi. Sitting on Redding gravelly clay loam soils - formed from slow erosion of soil from the craggy peaks of the Sierra Nevada Mountain range - these 20 year-old, organically farmed vines are perfectly suited for Lodi's intense summer heat. The second vineyard is the legendary Rorick Heritage Vineyard out in Murphy's. This one-of-a-kind hillside planting sits in a natural amphitheater composed mostly of Dolomite, a rare instance of limestone in a California Vineyard. Matt and Mara are the gold standard for the farming/homesteading lifestyle, tending to their vines organically and so very throughfully.
The Wine
Verdelho grapes were hand harvested on the 6th and 13th of August. They were whole-cluster pressed to stainless steel, where the juice was held and pumped over once daily for five days. Once native fermentation began, the juice was transferred to to a mixture of neutral oak barriques, pucheons and stainless stell, and allowed to ferment for two weeks until reaching dryness. Malolactic fermentation was arrested, and the wine was allowed to age on its lees for 4 months before being racked for bottling.
