2023 Poggio di Bortolone Frappato Vittoria, Sicily, Italy
$26.00
From southwest-facing slopes at roughly 260 meters on Vittoria’s iconic sabbie rosse—iron-rich red sands over porous marine limestone—this Frappato captures the delicacy and tension of the zone with crystalline precision. The 10-year-old vines are densely planted (~6,000/ha), farmed organically, and hand-harvested in late September at modest yields (~6 t/ha). In the cellar, Pierluigi Cosenza works with spontaneous fermentations at 18–20 °C over 18 days, followed by full malolactic and a short rest in stainless steel before bottling.
The result is a light, transparent ruby wine that’s all lift and finesse—wild strawberry, cherry, raspberry, and a flicker of blackberry, threaded with saline minerality from the limestone below. On the palate it’s pure and lively, with fine-grained tannins and a cool, red-berry crunch that makes it as refreshing as it is articulate. This is a benchmark example of modern Vittoria—bright, soulful, and true to the red sands that define it.
