Insula Chao de Lava Pahoehoe 10 Year, Azores, Portugal 375ml

$104.99

Chão de Lava Pahoehoe 10yr is a wine that harkins back to the Azores' long history of fortified production, which grew up alongside Madeira for hundreds of years before being essentially wiped out by the collapse of the wine economy in the late 19th century. It comes from a blend of old vineyards on the western coast of Pico in Criação Velha. The blend is mostly Arinto dos Acores (85%) with the remainder being Verdelho and Terrantez do Pico. It was fermented in used french oak barrels to moderate dryness (30 g/l RS),  fortified, then aged in those barrels without topping up or temperature control for 10 yrs. More full bodied and textured than most Madeira, with an incredibly complex smoky, salty, caramelized aromatic character. A truly unique picture of one of the world’s most unique terroirs.
