1990 Felsina Berardenga Rancia, Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG, Italy
$250.00
This is the historic Fèlsina vineyard cuvée, originating in 1983 from the steep, southwest-facing Rancia site above Castelnuovo Berardenga at around 400 m elevation. Planted with high-density vines rooted in limestone (alberese) and galestro marl soils, this finest parcel delivers sculpted Sangiovese with built-in tension. Early 1990s vintages were the first under the simple “Rancia” name.
The 1990 displays structured depth while retaining vibrancy, thanks to meticulous vinification: fully destemmed fruit fermented in stainless steel for 16–20 days at elevated temperatures, followed by 18–20 months of aging in new French oak barrels. That’s followed by at least 6–8 months of bottle aging before release.
On the nose, expect concentrated spice and floral notes layered over wild red and dark fruit. The palate reveals gravelly mineral lift, bright acidity, and firm yet integrated tannins. The finish is taut and building—an elegant evolution of structure rather than weight.
This is a benchmark vintage for Fèlsina Riserva: refined, age-worthy Sangiovese built on elevational site and mineral precision.
