In 2018, as the result of a change in the Douro legislation, we were forced to change the
mythical name “Vinha Centenária”. However, this was also an opportunity to finally honour our Founder, Eng. Hernâni Verdelho, with a name of Wine in his memory. Thus, and as the name suggests, the aim was to make a wine that praised the quality of the grapes, coming from a very old vineyard, with about 100 years, and the excellence of the terroir of Freixo de Numão – one of the best in the Douro. for table wines – thanks to its high altitude. Only 1300 bottles were bottled, all individually numbered.

In accordance with good old fashioned winemaking, the old vineyard in which the grapes were grown boasts many varieties, some of which are known only to men, in the region, of a certain age. These include Cornifesto, Bastardo, Casculho, Tourigo and Tinta Raiz.

The technology used is very simple, in accordance with the venerable age of the wine. The only traces of modernity were the stainless steel vats in which the wine was fermented and the yeast selected for the fermentation process. Even the press used to crush the bagasse was hand-driven.
After fermentation and the first racking the wine was placed in French oak barrels to rest and stabilise for ten months. It was then transferred to a stainless steel vat for around a year to ensure it spent another winter at altitude prior to bottling. This occurred in September 2021 after a slight clarification and light filtering. The wine was not stabilized using artificial cold enabling it to form a slight precipitation over time, which had no effect whatsoever on the quality of the wine.
