2024 La Furtiva Punt Verd, Terra Alta, Spain

The young winemaker Óscar Navas is deeply involved in several ventures: he started working at the 4 Kilos winery, now he owns his own winery, has worked in wine shops, and also manages a bar. Few things are capable of quenching his boundless thirst for knowledge. If that weren't enough, there's always a way to add another twist. Why not craft a red wine in the D.O. Terra Alta that benefits from an extended period of bottle aging? That's how La Furtiva Punt Verd came into being.
Despite its arid soils and Mediterranean climate with scorching summers, the wines of D.O. Terra Alta tend to exhibit a fruity character that diminishes with prolonged aging. These experiments are conducted in Villalba dels Arcs, his grandmother's village where Óscar has returned in search of his own legacy. His past is deeply rooted in ancient vineyards that thrive on deep clay soils with some limestone components. Here, in the south of Cataluña—between the Ebro River and the border with Aragón—the soils are low in organic matter and often influenced by the Cierzo wind and the gabardinada.
Taking these factors into account, Óscar Navas aims for his wines to simply reflect all of this, without any embellishments or artifice to alter them. "The essence is to seek a style that will endure for generations," he asserts. In his case, this style is based on direct pressing, some macerations of 24 hours, fermentations with indigenous yeasts, and extended aging periods. For La Furtiva Punt Verd, all this takes place in concrete tanks buried in the ground, where the wine will spend a month resting. - Decantalo
