2021 Atomique3 'Le Sedimentaire' Chardonnay, Willamette Valley, USA
$98.00
Jean-Marc Roulot’s first foray into domestic wine is tiny—and impressive. I met with Pedro Parra, the famed geologist, last year, and he tipped me off to the project. Parra works with Roulot in Burgundy, and he’s brought his talents to Oregon to launch this Chardonnay-focused venture with fellow winemaker Felipe Ramirez (of Rose & Arrow, where the wines are made).
The first vintage is 2021, with the wines centered on two distinct terroirs: volcanic basalt from the Eola-Amity Hills, and sedimentary/marine soils from Dundee’s Loubejac Vineyard.
I met with Ramirez last week and tasted both wines. They’re made the same way—clearly with Roulot’s hand—seeing about 18 months of élevage, followed by an extended period in tank (9–10 months) before bottling. They’re flat-out delicious, and they continue the conversation around Oregon’s world-class raw material. The basalt bottling is louder and more intensely flavored, while the “Sédimentaire” bottling shows a cooler, stonier profile. I loved both. - Chris Leon
