2022 Esmeralda García Las Miñañas Vino de Paraje, Castilla y Leon, Spain
$64.99
Location: Santiuste de San Juan Bautista is a small village located in the D.O. Rueda, in the region of Castilla y León, in the province of Segovia, Spain. Varietal: 100% Verdejo
Vineyard: Las Miñañas is a small single plot of Esmeralda’s oldest vines, located across the road from the Carrascal vineyard, in a sun-drenched, plateau-shaped area with distinctive gravelly/sandy soils, at 880 meters above sea level. The underground Salmoral stream passes just below the wind-blown vineyard, imparting freshness. Prephylloxera bush-trained vines are 205 years old. Farming is organic.
Vinification: Grapes were hand harvested in late September, the grapes were partially de-stemmed and lightly macerated on the skins for a few hours. Subsequently, they were pressed in a vertical press and the must obtained then underwent alcoholic fermentation with indigenous yeasts, in 500 liter dolia (Spanish clay amphora). After fermentation the wine was aged on its fine lees, for one year, in an old 600 liter chestnut barrel, then bottled without fining or filtration. No sulfites were added at any point.
Tasting Note: Creamy and structured with notes of white-fleshed fruit, bosc pear, white peach, delicate spices, dried herbs, and lots of earthy minerality. Bottles Produced: Limited production of about 500 bottles About the wine: This is Esmeralda’s most personal wine. According to her grandfather’s deed, the vines are 205 years old and are separated from the rest of the vineyards. She wanted to make a wine from this single plot, because it is distinctly unique and she has a profoundly emotional attachment to it. It was in this plot that her grandfather taught her how to correctly prune the vines, and where, as a young woman, she would follow her grandmother around, observing her tending to the vines, absorbing her wisdom. “It has a lot of weight for me, it is the plot of my life. The Miñañas, as the women of the family are known, inherit the weight of the unique treasures they hold in their hands, and I told my grandfather that I wanted to name this plot Las Miñañas, after my grandmother.”
