2023 J.B. Becker Wallufer Berg Bildstock Riesling Spatlese, Rheingau, Germany
$36.00
Becker makes Rheingau Prädikat wines like they were made 100 years ago – which is to say with very little residual sugar. Becker’s Spätlese have less residual sugar (by probably 20-30 grams?) than nearly everyone else’s – the 23 Bildstock has just over 20 grams, total. (Consider that a wine like Lauer's "Barrel X" has about 18 grams.) Yet here we have lower acids and more alcohol, so the wines have texture and bite. Seriously, this is a Spätlese to have with steak.

A Trip to Germany
In July I went to Germany for the first time, spending almost the entire trip in the Mosel – seeing places I’ve only read about, connecting familiar faces to their home turf and, celebrating 10 years of inspired work by importer vom Boden.
With a swath of German new arrivals landing, too, it felt like a good time to reflect on the 2022 vintage, share some takeaways from the trip and share details on our next in-person event. - Chris
