2024 Sergio Marani Verdicchio di Matelica, Marche, Italy
$22.00
Marani’s non-vineyard-designated Verdicchio di Matelica represents 40% of the winery’s production, incorporating vines between 10 and 30 years of age—younger than the 50+ year-old vines destined for the two cru bottlings but far from infancy. Hand-harvested and pressed directly, the wine undergoes spontaneous fermentation in 15-hectoliter oak casks of local Apennine origin that have been used continuously by the Marani family for over 50 years; it rests in these casks for a full year on its fine lees, with occasional stirring employed to keep reduction at bay, and is bottled without fining or filtration. Displaying remarkable tension and balance, this is a Verdicchio that supplements variety-typical notes of saffron and fennel with preserved lemons, citrus pith, and a lip-smacking calcareous salinity that swells on the wine’s relentless finish.
