A (Biodynamic) Chianti Classico We Love

Monte Bernardi's 'Retromarcia'
A vibrant $30 Chianti Classico from one of our favorite winemakers.
WHAT'S IN THE BOTTLE:

100% biodynamic Sangiovese from Panzano, a village nestled in the center of Chianti Classico. Panzano is defined by its galestro soil (a mix of schist, clay and limestone) – and a collection of wine growers committed to organic farming and natural winemaking.
Winemaker Michael Schmelzer is one of the most inspired farmers here, and frankly, anywhere. He goes beyond biodynamics, leaning into pre-industrial methods and reconnecting with the practices that existed in Chianti before technology and money transformed its landscape.

Originally from Michigan, he turned his life upside down to pursue a passion; a decision that led to him running one of Tuscany's most authentic estates. There's a lot to unpack here – and we have a special evening planned to do just that (more on that below!).

'Retromarcia' is Michael's entry-level wine, an amazing intro to his clean, aromatic style of Sangiovese. The name echoes his "retro" return to the ultra-traditional, centuries-old traditions of Chianti winemaking: the grapes are destemmed, pressed and macerated in concrete vats for 3 weeks with manual punch downs, followed by 18 months of aging in large casks, concrete and used Tonneaux. No filtering, and minimal sulfur used before bottling.

WHY WE DIG IT:

Aside from our love for Michael, his story and his methods, it's an exceptional peek into what Chianti Classico is really meant to be: fresh and pure fruited, with medium body and beautiful acidity.

HOW WE'RE DRINKING IT:

With any delicious meal tbh, but, when in Rome: break out the sauce!! Or elevate your Friday night pizza game.
