Fine Disregard's Old Vine California

12/14/25
On the heels of some incredible releases from the personal project of Turley’s head winemaker, we have a set of compelling bottles from Turley’s assistant winemaker, and his better half.
These are magnetic wines that speak to the couple’s connections with the keepers of California’s old vines – with Bedrock, Chalone, Del Barba, and Spenker Ranch vineyards in today’s offer.

Fine Disregard is the work of Mike Schieffer and Kara Maraden – truly a two person operation, this is where their energy goes when they’re not at their day jobs (Mike at Turley, and Kara as director of viticulture for Foley Family Farms).

Their connections have afforded them bits of some of California’s oldest fruit (the oldest below was planted in 1900), plus newer but still very pedigreed sites like the Semillon that Morgan Twain-Peterson planted at Bedrock in 2019.

All of the reds are done whole cluster; they favor this approach for texture and herbaceousness. Winemaking is minimal intervention, everything is aged 14 months in neutral oak, and alcohol levels are restrained for a style that feels graceful and intimately connected to the fruit.

It’s a bright, focused lineup that’s just a pleasure to dip into.

2023 Fine Disregard Wine Co. Bedrock Vineyard Semillon, Sonoma County, California $41
Sourced from vines planted by Morgan Twain-Peterson at Bedrock Vineyard in 2019 using cuttings from Monte Rosso (which fun fact, is the world's second oldest Semillon site). Whole cluster pressed with no soak, full malolactic fermentation and over a year on the gross lees. Incredibly textured and savory, with phenolic drive; this is a wine that bursts out of the glass.

2023 Fine Disregard Wine Co. Chalone Vineyard Chenin Blanc, Gavilan Mountain Range, California $45
From Chalone Vineyard, an incredible source owned by the Foley family: the oldest planting of Chenin in the US, it was planted in 1919 in a mix of limestone, granite and volcanic soils (as Mike noted to us, this is the only place in the world he's aware of with all three of these soils in combination). Whole cluster pressed into neutral French oak, with full malolactic fermentation and bottled unfined, unfiltered. This is vinous, dense Chenin infused with California sunshine and limestone-driven acid structure; such a special taste.

2022 Fine Disregard Wine Co. 'Los Parajes' Carignane, Lodi, California, $40
From two old vine vineyards in Lodi's sandy soils: Spenker Ranch, planted in 1900, and Mule Plane, planted in the 1920s (and farmed by the same family since the 1850s). Whole cluster fermentation with about two weeks of skin contact and gentle pumpovers, then pressed into neutral French oak followed by a year on its gross lees. A fresh, high-toned wine that's purposefully approachable and highlights the aromatic side of Carignane, via savory smoked herbs and bright red fruit.

2021 Fine Disregard Wine Co. Del Barba Mataro, Contra Costa County, California, $41
From Contra Costa's Del Barba vineyard, planted in the 1920s by the family patriarch (and also, where Turley sources some Zinfandel). Mike noted for us that with sand some 40 feet deep, Contra Costa is "like walking on the beach...Mataro needs one foot in the water and one foot facing the sun, that's what Contra Costa is." Whole cluster fermentation, pressed into neutral French oak for 14 months of aging on its gross lees. Fitting to its location, the wine is saline, transparent and energetic.
