Grenache on Granite is one of those mystical combinations.

One that turns a grape best known for making broad-shouldered Châteauneuf into aromatic wines that are as detailed and joyous as any Pinot out there.

Spain has embraced this combination, most notably in the Sierra de Gredos mountain range (you might recall, our love for the beautiful wines of Las Pedreras).

Below, four bottles to know: three from Gredos and one brand new wine from an area we’re sure to be zooming further in on very soon.

THE LEGEND

It’s impossible to reference this area without Comando G: pioneers of the fine wine revolution in Gredos, they were the first to claim this terroir as some of the world's finest. 'Rozas' is a snapshot of their finest plots, the bigger brother of their ‘Brujas’ wine. Rarely seen on shelves.

What can’t Raul Perez do? This bottle is as serious as Gredos gets. Around the corner from the Comando G winery is a prized parcel called 'Piedra Cachada,' which is located at just over 1100 meters in elevation, on pure granite, with bush-pruned vines of Garnacha. GREDOS FOR EVERYDAY

The expressions of Gredos above are incredibly special, but they're also not inexpensive. 4 Monos, an inspired winery run by four friends, has a delicious answer for a weeknight bottle: the 'GR-10,' a "villages level" red from several parcels. Half of the fruit is destemmed, giving a delicious fruit quality; and none of the wine sees new wood, allowing for the cooling mountain flavors to shine though.

EXPLORING ARAGÓN

As Gredos has become more widely known, the area is crowded with new producers. So the savvy talents are looking East to Aragón; similarly, granite defines the zone (with kisses of limestone) making irresistible Garnacha from bush-trained vines. And because it's still lesser known (for know), prices are incredibly fair.
