New Spain: Còsmic, Águila & Cantalapiedra
Our Spanish arrivals capture how dynamic and diverse the current state is here. Below, new wines from Manuel Cantalapiedra (including his personal project), inspired Catalan wines from Còsmic Vinyaters, and world-class Albillo being made by Dominio del Aguila.

CÒSMIC VINYATERS
Salvador Batlle Barrabeig, the man behind Còsmic, uniquely captures how special and diverse the natural wines of Catalonia are, through multiple terroirs.
He has vineyards both in Emporda (just south of France, in the Pyrenees) and coastal Penedes; two zones which, unlike most, flex between the olive-studded, textured wines of the mountains and the salty, deeply quenching profiles of the coast. Salvador leans into this diversity with aromatic petillants, thoroughly Mediterranean orange wines, and blustery reds. It's a joy to have these back.

DOMINIO DEL ÁGUILA
Since 2010, Dominio del Águila has become a reference in Ribera del Duero—not for inky, dark Tempranillo (which they do make beautifully), but rather for their organic farming and lifting the Albillo grape to the world stage.
Jorge Monzón (who cut his teeth at DRC and Vega Sicilia) spearheaded the domaine and single-handedly advocated to get Albillo into the DO. The wines all see 30-36 months in barrel before bottle. And the rarest—Variedades Blancas Ancestrales—is an ancient, pre-phylloxera field blend featuring Albillo Mayor, Albillo Real, Pirulés, Castellana Blanca, and Garnacha Blanca. Singular.

MANUEL CANTALAPIEDRA
Manuel Cantalapiedra is back with a refresh of his centenarian Verdejo. Famously known for long élevage, with equally long time in tank, these are salty wines with gun flint reduction that takes you Burgundy.
However, this drop includes the first release of his self-named personal project. The material is still ancient Verdejo, but he’s distinguished these from the family domaine so he can play with a more hands-off vinification, and low-to-no sulfur.
