Reframing Partida Creus

A benchmark of Spanish natural wine, Penedès' Partida Creus has returned to its roots: a personal, incredibly focused (and once again, estate-grown) approach to native varieties.
Their newest release delivers on the lower ABV, san soufre style we all fell in love with. Bright-fruited, elegant and alive, it's a pleasant re-entry to our shelves.

Partida Creus is the work of Massimo Marchiori and Antonella Gerona, a couple from Lombardy whose work and studies in the '90s landed them in Barcelona's seaside.

In 2001 they relocated to the limestone-studded hills of Massís de Bonastre in Baix Penedés and began reviving old, abandoned vineyards of native (then fairly obscure) varietals.

Working organically and outside of DO guidelines, they became a benchmark of the natural wine revolution; and after two decades, the work had expanded to include négoce fruit (and the increase in quantity and global distribution that comes with it).

With the '24 vintage the work has returned to 100% estate fruit along with their desire for a slower pace, dialed in to the vineyards that started it all.

Of this release we've picked standouts from their négoce work, our longtime favorite estate 'VN' bottling, and (of course) vermouth. All are unfiltered, alive, and joyous takes on native varietals, in their original (remarkably clean) san soufre style.

THE WINES

2023 'BN' Blanco Natural $28
A blend of 30-50 year old Macabeu, Parellada, Garnacha Blanca and the rare local Vinyater, macerated 2-3 days. An open and expressive style: salty lemon and mandarin, mediterranean herbs, crispy texture that builds to a little richness on the finish. 11%

2023 'CL' Clarete $29
⅔ Garnacha Blanca and ⅓ Garnacha Tinta from Grenache's spiritual homeland in Terra Alta, both macerated and blended together before fermentation is finished. A really pretty wine: ripe, tart red fruits with elegant dried floral and leather secondaries. 11.5%

2022 'VN' Vinel-lo Tinto $28
From their estate fruit, 35 year old vines: Garnacha, Sumoll, Garrut (Monastrell), Trepat and Carineña macerated just 2-3 days. Joyous but serious: vinous, bright red fruits, lacy tannins, refreshing saline finish. 11%

'MUZ' Vermouth 1L $35
Absolutely delicious red fruited, fresh oregano-scented, truly mediterranean vermouth. Keep it simple over ice with an orange peel and splash of soda and cheers goodbye to summer.
