The Under-$40 Burgundy We're Loving
Buisson's Bourgogne Blanc & Rouge
Beautiful, biodynamic Saint-Romain based Burgundy that you can surely drink on a Tuesday.
WHAT'S IN THE BOTTLE:
The 2023 Bourgogne Blanc is a blend of estate and purchased fruit from Saint-Romain and the Maconnais (including their friends at Domaine Guillot-Broux), aged a full year in used 228L barrels. There's a beautiful push and pull between the bright, higher altitude Saint-Romain fruit and the more opulent Maconnais négoce juice in this wine. Stony, floral, Burg Blanc that feels weighty while eschewing big oak – it's nicely done. $37
The 2022 Bourgogne Rouge is from a single estate site tucked just above the domaine's seminal holdings in Saint-Romain's Sous Roche, also aged a full year in used 228L barrels. It's so expressive of the village's signature minerality, which runs a streak through bright cherry fruit. Energetic, uplifting and gastronomic entry-level Burgundy at its best. $33
Both wines are from Domaine Henri et Gilles Buisson, a centuries-old family estate that's quietly been bottling some of Saint-Romain's most consistent, quality Burgundy for almost 80 years. Farming at the estate has been organic since the 1970s, finally certified in '09 and in reality, fully practicing biodynamics.
The family motto is, "Making wine is extracting Heaven from Earth" – a simple but clearly, extremely effective, approach to what they are doing.
WHY WE DIG IT:
We can be frank on this: it's been really hard to find good Burgundy at this price (and it's certainly not getting any easier). We really miss the ease of bistro-friendly Burgundy, and these bottles bring us back to center.
HOW WE'RE DRINKING IT:
Hardcore channeling Julia Child on this one: "Cooking well doesn't mean cooking fancy!"
