The World's Best House Red?

11/04/24
In a way, the wine below is the most overachieving idea of a restaurant’s “house red."
Borgogno e Carbone was conceived by Fabrizio Borgogno and Stefano Carbone who own and operate More e Macine (one of Piedmont’s best restaurants). The first two vintages were poured exclusively at their Osteria. Now on to its third vintage, a little bit has landed on our shelves.
It’s a pure Nebbiolo from one of Barolo’s most sought-after villages, produced by two of the area’s top talents. And, it’s outstanding.

Borgogno e Carbone first vintage was in 2019, born from 35 year old fruit the duo previously sold from family holdings in Verduno. When they decided to keep the fruit and bottle their own wine, they tapped the incredible duo of Gian Luca Colombo and Federico Scarzello (whose ‘Altre Vie’ wines we highlighted in October’s wine club).

The winemaking-duo have a penchant for making graceful, wildly elegant wines.

And they deliver on that here by fermenting in tank and then moving the dry wine to 500 liter neutral oak barrels where it rests until the following summer. The fermentation in stainless and small amount of time in wood results in a boisterous, juicy Nebbiolo that is truly irresistible. With all the signature notes of Nebbiolo – rose and ripe red fruit especially – turned up to 10.

A joy to drink and a sneakily serious wine (especially for a house red).
