Jamie Graves is the Japan Portfolio Manager at importer Skurnik Wines, importing some of the most sought after sake in the world, and representing the full breadth of sake styles being made today. He has worked in the world of Japanese cuisine since 2003 when he left a safe job teaching English to cook in traditional restaurants in rural Japan for several years. After learning the language, he returned to the US and opened several groundbreaking Japanese restaurants in New York, including Kajitsu, Brushstroke and Sakamai, where he translated the finer points of Japanese cooking and sake for American diners. In 2014 he was a finalist in the World Sake Sommelier Championships in Tokyo, placing 4th and receiving the Judge’s Choice Award and in 2019 was one of Wine Enthusiast’s “40 Under 40” of people changing the drinks business.
