2016 Fumey-Chatelain Vin Jaune, Jura, France

The 2016 Arbois Vin Jaune comes from a beautiful vintage for flor wine (better than 2018), and the wine displays very good acidity and freshness. It's the best wine they have done in the last few years. This comes from the lieux-dits Au Barbi, Sauvagny and La Vasée, all on blue marl soils, and it matured the compulsory six years after the harvest under a veil of yeasts, during which time the wine suffered evaporation and concentration of everything: dry extract, acidity and alcohol (that reached 15%), but what's important is that all components are in balance and harmony. It's complex and nuanced, with notes of almond, green apple and smoky peat. It's long and fresh, powerful, but you can still taste the variety, and it's vibrant, with lots of energy. A great and cool wine! For Marin Fumey, whose family started making Vin Jaune in 1992, the best vintages for this style have been 1999, 2009 and 2016. And 2019 will be a great Vin Jaune vintage too ... all vintages ending in nine! This is certainly impressive. They produced 5,000 bottles (62-centiliter clavelins) of it. It was bottled in February 2023. - Luis Gutierrez
