2019 Philip Lardot der Hirt Riesling Landwein Trocken, Mosel, Germany
This is the second vintage from this incredibly special parcel in the upper Terrassen Mosel, the Valwiger Herrenberg. Because Phil is eschewing the labeling system of Germany and bottling as German Land Wein, he is not legally allowed to put the vineyard designation. Thus, we have an ode to the vineyard's long history as a shepherd's path (Hirt" meaning Shepherd). The vines here were planted in 1945, on the traditional single-post "Einzelstöck" system. Iron rich and red-grey sandstone, this vintage provides a reserved, taut and stern expression of Riesling. For those who know and love Stein's "Ohne" bottling, this is cut from the same cloth, perhaps more direct and compact - but it has that same clear yet lees-driven palate, that same oceanic citrus definition. Decant and drink over a few days."
