2020 Madson Pinot Noir 'Legan Vineyard' Santa Cruz Mountains, California, USA
$59.99
Planted in 1972, Legan Vineyard sits on its own roots at 1140-1255 ft of elevation in the Southern Santa Cruz Mountains. We believe that the vineyard was planted with massale cuttings from David Bruce, but there are no remaining records to confirm this. The vineyard has 2 blocks- one block is located in a basin among Redwood trees and the other on the hillside just above. The āBasinā block lies flat and was planted in deep sandy loam soils. The āBasinā block produces an ethereal wine with bright high tones and an elegant fragrance. The āHillsideā block was planted on a steep slope in shallow, sandstone soils. The Hillside Block produces noticeably less fruit and the wines are far more rustic than the Basin Block. Facing south, the Hillside block endures more heat and more daylight than the Basin block. The fruit from the āHillsidesā block is extremely dark and piercing with depth and concentration. We vinified the Legan Vineyard Pinot Noir with 100% whole cluster fermentation. By keeping the clusters and stems intact we are able to finesse the extraction of tannin, and create a Pinot Noir that has savory character and depth in flavor. After months of elevage we selected 6 of our favorite barrels to include in the Legan Single Vineyard Bottling.
