2020 Villa Tolnay Névtelen, Badacsony, Hungary

Villa Tolnay is located at the foot of the volcanic Csobánc hill, on the northern shore of Lake Balaton  in western Hungary. The ancient volcanic soils and primeval sediments of the former Pannonian Sea  give the wines an unmistakably volcanic expression, with distinctive minerality and vibrant acidity.  The winery was founded in 2004, and today is comprised of 25 hectares on and around Csobánc. 

Névtelen (“Unnamed”) is a delicious red blend that Philipp and the team at Villa Tolnay could not find a name for, so “Névtelen” eventually stuck and became the official name of the wine. Rich with ample volcanic minerality and spice, the wine has aromas of black cherries, violet and cinnamon, with tobacco and sour cherries on the palate. Vintage: 2020 was an early vintage, with harvest beginning two weeks earlier than usual. Overall it was a balanced year, and the wines are fresh, elegant, crisp and fruity.

Harvest: Harvest took place between 10-30 October 2020. The grapes were picked by hand. Varietals: 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 50% Merlot. Soil and estate: The grapes come from a 3-hectare plot directly below the winery at the foot of Csobánc hill. The vines are 12 years old. The soils are volcanic and intensely rocky, with clay, sand, basalt, and ancient Pannonian sea sedimentation.

Fermentation: After destemming and a quick press, the wine was spontaneously fermented with native yeasts in aged 4000 L steel/ceramic tanks. Fermentation was on the lees. The wine was then aged and underwent malolactic fermentation for an additional 10 months in 500 L barrels.

Aging: Aged for 10 months in 500 L Stockinger oak barrels (light to medium toasting).

Other details: Very low sulfites added. Certified organic farming, unfiltered, unfined and vegan.
