Another collector's item, the 2021 Pietrafocaia is a Brunello in every way except that they do not have the rights to call this vineyard Brunello (new Brunello rights cannot be created; they must be purchased or possibly transferred...kind of like how liquor licenses work in some states). This is a single vineyard selection of the very best fruit from John's favorite vineyard. Redolent of the original vintages of "Pergole Torte" or even Soldera: a wine that sits outside of its classification, and will not be produced every vintage. The wine comes from the "Vigna Vecchia" (planted in the 1990s), full of rocks and big chunks of galestro. The center of the vineyard also contains a large strip of pure limestone which gives the fruit from these vines a specific and unique verticality. A very savory, mineral expression of Sangiovese. This wine is for real wine-drinkers: connoisseurs who are passionate about Sangiovese and Montalcino. - JGB
