Charles Lachaux started his micro-négoce because of Aligoté. More than once, he’d blind tasted d’Auvenay’s Aligoté Sous Châtelet alongside top premier and grand cru Chardonnay — and more than once, it held its own. Sometimes it even stole the show.

His family had long grown Aligoté, once bottling it under the Arnoux name, before the grape fell out of favor and the fruit was sold off to négociants. Charles brought it back — determined to vinify it himself.

Alongside the Aligoté, the inaugural Charles Lachaux lineup included five other wines. The Aligoté comes from the family’s own vines; the rest, from friends farming with the same level of care Charles expects in his own vineyards. The label itself was designed by Charles’ wife, Louise — the rose a nod to their eldest daughter, Rose.

The Aligoté vines sit in Vosne-Romanée, at the foot of the slope on white, marly soils. A quarter of the vines were planted in the 1930s, the rest in the ‘90s. Whole clusters are pressed directly; fermentation kicks off with native yeasts in barrel. Farming follows biodynamic principles, and like the rest of the domaine’s wines, the vines aren’t hedged. The wine ages for 12 months in barrel (no new oak) and is bottled unfined, unfiltered, with no sulfur added.
