2023 Hiyu Wine Farm Tzum Lorelei Columbia Valley, USA
$79.99
“Lorelei is the Goddess of the Rhine River and we use this label to bottle explorations of small parcels on Underwood Mountain. This part of the Gorge resembles German ‘Big River’ sites on the Rhine and Mosel Rivers with steep slopes that rise up from a cliff about 1000 feet above the Columbia River.”
Grapes: Albariño, Gewurztraminer
Vineyard: Small parcels on Underwood Mountain on the rainforest’s edge.
2023:
Making of: Grapes are co-fermented in a conical wooden vat for 10 days before being pressed into a barrel, where the wine finishes fermentation and ages for a little over a year.
Personality (winemaker’s note):
“The Gorge is a particularly special place for Gewurztraminer. The very long growing season (these grapes were harvested in the first week of November) allows the grapes to pass through gold and develop a deep ruby color. The wines avoid over-the-top exoticism and residual sugar…this is replaced with more minerality, and a subtle and very fine perfume.
Albariño on this site is remarkable and when fermented on its own is more like Chenin Blanc with broad, palette staining acidity that requires years to soften. The Gewurztraminer softens the wine, it brings roundness to the acids and a level of refinement that it doesn’t quite achieve on its own. It also brings a subtle rose colored hue and floral and spice notes to match the Albariño’s reductive, smoky minerality.
In many ways this ends up being more like top level Condrieu than what we would expect from its parents grapes. The gentleness and subtlety is striking.”
