2023 J. G. Benda Rosso di Montalcino, Tuscany, Italy 1.5L magnum
$240.00
2023 was a very challenging vintage. The combination of a long, wet, cool spring and a hot, dry summer lead to a huge peronospora problem. The disease pressure was intense and Benda lost almost 40% of their production. As a result, John decided not to produce an IGT Pietrafocaia in 2023. The wine that remained was either blended into the Rosso or Brunello, or was sold in bulk. As you might expect, the resulting Rosso he is offering us is spectacular. It is fresh, juicy and immediately delightful. The tannins are balanced and the wine is structured, but elegant. He called it "amabile" which is a cute way of calling it friendly or charming. It is more serious than that- his perfectionism and aspirational vision leads him to downplay what is clearly a spectacular bottle of Sangiovese. Impressive.
