2023 Maison Jaune Savennieres, Loire, France
$55.00
From one of Savennières’ most artisanal voices, Maison Jaune was founded in 2013 by Jean-Claude Taddei and his wife Lorine as a tiny garagiste project on a single hectare of schist soils in Bouchemaine above the Loire. Taddei — a former professor in Angers — farms biodynamically and with a Fukuoka-inspired minimal-intervention ethos, foregoing tilling and embracing natural biodiversity in the vineyard while maintaining organic certification and ultra-low treatments. Grapes are hand-harvested in multiple passes, pneumatically pressed, and spontaneously fermented with indigenous yeasts before aging about one year in neutral barrels. The wine is bottled unfined, unfiltered, with minimal SO₂ (<20 ppm). Total production is tiny (400 cases), making this Chenin Blanc both terroir-rich and rare.
In the glass, the 2023 shows crystalline tension and slate-etched purity: bright citrus, quince, white flowers, and a chalky mineral thread borne of Savennières’ famed hillside schist. Fine phenolics and lifted acidity carry through a long, saline finish—precise, textural, and both immediate and ageworthy.
