Always: we must Trévallon

08/28/24
We talk about obsessions a lot, but in this case it’s personal.
I absolutely adore Domaine de Trévallon. From their history and epic labels, to the final age-worthy wines, They are simply one of my favorites names from anywhere.
One of my first vacations with my now-wife was in Mexico, and I suitcased a couple bottles (as one does), one of which was Trévallon Blanc. We opened it while we recovered from the sun, and over our first refill the conversation of a life together started – a massive affirmation that this was my person and life together was the real deal. This beautiful bottle always takes me back to that warming memory.
The backstory for Domaine de Trévallon is pretty romantic, too – so we're sharing a bit more on that to celebrate the newest release.

If you don’t already know the story, you might be surprised to hear that it starts with Picasso’s Guernica. After selling a tapestry version of the famous painting (commissioned by Nelson Rockefeller), French artist Jacqueline de la Baume Dürrbach and her husband René used the proceeds to purchase property in Les Baux de Provence.

Alongside his parents, their son Eloi Dürrbach was pivotal in transforming the estate to the region’s most interesting vineyards, and re-shaping the AOC as a whole. They planted Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, bucking appellation restrictions and instead respecting the pre-phylloxera makeup of the area. Now, despite originally bottling under a more generic Vin de Pays, they have grown to be respected as making some of Provence’s most authentic wine. It’s a big part of why Alpilles IGP was established in 2009.

The labels are just as iconic (and sought after) as the wines.

Also an artist, René had painted a series of 50 posters; and every year, the Dürrbachs select the poster which best represents the vintage – e.g. warm colors for warmer vintages, cool colors for cooler vintages. Unique but part of a series; just like their wine.

Some quick tech:

- Organic farming from the start
- All native yeasts
- 100% whole cluster fermentation on the reds
- Reds aged two years in a mix of foudre/barrel
- Whites aged one year in barrel
- Minimal racking

These are extremely elegant, complex bottles of wine.

A polished representation of the place where Provence’s Mediterranean climate meets the rugged Alpilles mountains. If you're not already a collector, you will be charmed.
