Maffrei '23s are here 💣
We’ve been mentioning Maffrei where we can: the young La Morra-based duo (and self-proclaimed “bros in wine”) with a firm role in Langhe’s newest chapter. The arrival of their ‘23s may only be their third vintage, but they’re already some of the most sought after bottles from the area (and, very limited in release).
Nebbiolo, Dolcetto and a re-stock of the hugely popular Bianco all just landed – and as we look ahead to their anticipated Barolo release we’re digging in…
Brothers Andrea and Stefano were born into Barolo’s old guard (their last name is Mascarello!). But, rather than simply inheriting a family affair, they’ve made significant effort to establish a new, energetic estate of their own.
At the heart of it is a vineyard in La Morra’s Torriglione planted by their grandfather, directly adjacent to the old hilltop farmhouse they purchased in 2021. There’s also a high-altitude Dolcetto parcel in Diano d’Alba further east; and a newly-acquired site in La Morra’s highest vineyard edging the high-wire Serradenari cru. (See below to get a sense of their breathtaking sites.)
Stylistically, the wines follow suit: they’re youthful, full of satiny but high toned fruit. Working in concrete and stainless steel, it’s a lineup in pursuit of preserving the freshness they get from extra notches of elevation.
The result is an exciting balance of complexity and instant-drinkability.
2023 MAFFREI LANGHE BIANCO $45
Tbh, the most original white wine we've seen out of the Langhe in years. 40/40/20 Arneis, Riesling and Nascetta fermented and aged in stainless steel, for a stylish mix of high-toned refreshment and deeply layered fruit.
2023 MAFFREI LANGHE DOLCETTO $45
Dolcetto macerated for 12 days (with 10% whole cluster inclusion), raised in concrete tank. Spiced red fruit with a landing of soft tannin, and just enough freshness to remind you where you are.
2023 MAFFREI LANGHE NEBBIOLO $52
This was their first cuvée with the 2021 vintage, and still the main affair (that is, until their Barolo is released). 100% organic Nebbiolo from 30-40 year old vines, done in stainless steel tank and concrete vat with semi-carbonic maceration. Unfined, unfiltered, minimal SO2. A pure-fruited, aromatic, forward-facing wine.
