Teach us to care and not to care — A verse from T.S. Eliot’s 1930 poem Ash Wednesday, and a fitting motto for our 2022 vintage. The year I became even more aware that winemaking means focusing all your energy on what you can influence, and letting go of what you can’t. This approach allows us to create wines that are precise and solid, yet unforced and genuine.”
2022 is the first vintage of this wine, which Milan named after the Japanese word for fox — shapeshifters, like the Blaufrankisch in this special plot.
Grapes: Blaufrankisch
Vineyard: Spodní, 30-year-old vines on calcareous loess soil, in Moravský Žižkov
Making of (2022): Grapes are hand-harvested in October 2022, de-stemmed, and spend 3 weeks on skins in open vats where spontaneous fermentation takes place. Free-run juice (no pressing) is transferred to 3000l Stockinger oak foudre, where the wine is left to age for 3 years before bottling in November 2025.
Personality (winemaker’s note): “The Blaufrankisch in this vineyard is very diverse, with vines changing color very slowly—some grapes still blue while others are smaller, darker, and looser, their vines already shedding leaves. This combination gives a very Pinot-like wine every year: well-structured, elegant, and disarming already when young, with its character unfurling and becoming even more delicate, poetic and seductive with age. ”
