It’s not a surprise, we love organic Chablis (exhibits A, B and C). So, we can’t believe we haven’t yet dedicated a note to one of the original organic estates: Moreau-Naudet.

On the textured, generous end of Chablis, Virginie Moreau maintains an uncompromising domaine that, in style and quality, comfortably sits alongside names like Pico and Raveneau.

The first drop of the year is here; typically, this domaine arrives in a couple waves, and this will likely be the only one that arrives with pre-tariff pricing. Thankfully, it includes their core Chablis and Petit Chablis; plus library vintages of the Premier and Grand Cru wines. And after revisiting the lineup last fall, can confirm: it’s still really, really good 👌

Virginie’s husband, Stéphane Moreau, came from four centuries of winemakers, eventually taking over the family domaine from his father in 1993. After Stéphane’s tragic death in 2016 at just 47, Virginie and the assistant winemaker they affectionately call ‘Coco’ pressed on with his blueprints; and through detailed, incredibly hard work, Virginie has managed to continue making some of Chablis’ most consistent wines.

The 25 hectare organic estate is anchored by the region’s iconic Premier Crus (Montmains, Forêts, Montée de Tonnerre, Vaillons), with one Grand Cru (Valmur).
Chablis and Petit Chablis bottlings maintain the more open-knit style; squeaky clean but somehow still so charismatic, these are wines that simply draw you in.

On the winemaking: after harvesting on the ripe end, the fruit generally sees extended élevage (including a year and a half on the lees) in a mix of old oak and stainless steel; with warming temps, Virginie is shifting even more to aging in tank, to keep the wines in the boundaries of what Chris Leon would call, "the crispiest category of all time." ;)
